Music Agenda 3/16-4/3

********This agenda covers two weeks of lessons. the activities will span 3-4 classes total depending on how this current weeks schedule with half days effects your child classes.

********April 11th: Little Mermaid Jr. Work day! It is a Saturday at Holy Spirit.  We will be painting Scenery, Making props and other items needed for the show.  The kids will get pizza and drinks for lunch.  It is important they are there to help.  If you can help with watching kids, please let me know.  If your child cannot attend, please let me know asap.  If you can loan us drop cloths or rollers or paint brushes that would be great as well.  Kids need to wear clothes that can get dirty.

*********April 21st: East Deanery Band Festival: Permission Slip to follow.At: Scecina Memorial High School, When: April 21st, Time: We leave at 9:00AM, Transportation: Scecina Busses will pick the kids up, Lunch, Dinner and snacks: Provided at the festival

Kindergarten- We will sing, Had a Little Rooster, No more Pie, Chop Chop Chippity Chop, Frog in the Meadow and Over in the meadow.  Students will review rhythm stick songs from other cultures,  practice rhythm reading, and start working on distinguishing vocal, instrumental, and environmental sounds. We are working on experimenting with our different voices, yelling, singing, whispering, and talking.  

First Grade-  We will continue reading with Solfege, students will read with texts with notes and working on the song, Engine Engine Number 9 and Mince Fly Pie. Students are singing The Old Woman and the Pig, Kitty Alone, There was a little turtle, I met a bear, Johnny works with 1 hammer to focus on pitch matching and expanding vocal range. Students will continue writing a story in groups, this story will include 1 vocal sound, instrumental sound, body percussion and found item.  They will create a book to show to their class.

Second Grade-  Last Supper Practice.  Kids are working on learning motions and songs for the Last Supper Presentation in the church.   

Third Grade: Notes and the staff learning in preparation for writing a lifeskills song with the barred instruments.  We are also learning about Dynamic Markings 

Fourth Grade- Notes and the staff learning in preparation for reading music with recorders.    All students need to have a recorder after they return from break.


Fifth Grade- Notes and the staff learning in preparation for reading music with recorders.  The recorder curriculum that the kids will begin after break will include improvising as well.  The kids will be creating with their recorders.  All students need to have a recorder after they return from break.


Annual Fund Dinner(AFD) Little Mermaid Jr.: Practices after break will go until 4:30 daily, please make sure kids are staying until practice is over.  April 11th, work day to work on props.  Please let me know if you can volunteer and help that Saturday we need parent involvement. The kids are working hard! 

The Advanced and Beginning Band  groups:  April 21st, East Deanery Band Festival, Permission Slips go out tomorrow! We are continuing work on  various songs that are common in the pep band music world, ask them about the "Hey Song", "Go Big Green", "Happy Birthday", and "Jaws".  Students will start learning "Happy" "The Holy Spirit School Song".  We are also working on Seaway March, and Happy for East Deanery Band Festival.  

Guitars-  Playing and preparing for Mass. They continue to prepare for the concert during the school day on May 18th.  This group has really impressed me, with the leadership from the students.  The boys work so well together and really are making excellent strides.  I see the great work that the boys and Mrs. Newhart are accomplishing, so proud of them!

Music Agenda 3/9-3/13

***We are starting to work on scenery and props for Annual Fund Dinner(Middle School Musical)  If you have any painting rollers, brushes or painting supplies(drop cloths) you would be willing to donate please send in with the kids.  If you have a talent for painting, please let me know, we have a large mural that needs painted or just sketched for the kids to paint.    PLEASE SEND KIDS IN WITH PAINT SHIRTS, PANTS AND OLD SOCKS!!!  THANKS!  A date will be coming in early April to have a prop work Saturday.  We would feed the kids lunch and we would work on all items needed for show staging and props.

*******Recorders!!!!  We are going to be doing recorders in 4th and 5th grade this year.  Different curriculum with each grade.  We will do the Recorder Karate with 4th grade and Jim Tinter Curriculum for 5th grade.  Students will need to have a recorder.  Forms  to order recorders will be given to the kids, the week of the March 2nd.  You are welcome to use one from home, purchase online,  or through a music store.  I will place and order also next week.  Deadline is Thursday March 12th.  We will begin use after Spring Break.

Students will start writing a story in groups, this story will include 1 vocal sound, instrumental sound, body percussion and found item.  They will create a book to show to their class.

Second Grade-  We will create rhythm cards for 2nd grade to read, and begin practice reading more advanced rhythms.    Students will dance to Old Joe Clark, Kye kye kule, Hop Old Squirrel, My hat it has 3.  Students will then create and write songs in groups and put found items, body percussion, instruments and vocal sounds into their creations.  

Third Grade: Peter and the Wolf Review from 2nd grade. Due to ISTEP the kids were not assessed on their ability to identify instruments and families by sight and sound, we will practice before the assessment.   Body notes and their sounds.  

Fourth Grade-   We will sing, "Never Smile at a Crocodile" , as I ask them to predict what we will be doing today.   We will continue as  we read "Carnival of the Animals", this book incorporates the instruments in the orchestra. Students will listen and analyze music with identifying instruments and they families, connecting how the instruments enhance the story.  Students will begin creating a story and decide how they will put instruments with the story perform for the class. 

Fifth Grade- Students will continue to look at how music is math, to read music it requires counting, adding, subtracting and creating equations.  Students will sing the song, "Rhythm is Math", students will read basic rhythm cards while playing percussion instrument, then create 4 beat patterns of their own.  Mrs. Simms will give students a picture and in their notebooks they will have to identify using notes the area of the object.  Students will then create their own math equation or problem for their peers to figure out. Students will write an equation in their notebooks and others will solve. Students will explain why they got the answers they put for the problem. 

Annual Fund Dinner(AFD) Little Mermaid Jr.-Students should have all parts memorized. We are working on cleaning up dances and running through the show.

The Advanced and Beginning Band  groups:  We are continuing work on  various songs that are common in the pep band music world, ask them about the "Hey Song", "Go Big Green", "Happy Birthday", and "Jaws".  Students will start learning "Happy" "The Holy Spirit School Song" and some others.  East Deanery Band Festival Dates are still being set, coordination of multiple schools has proved to be challenging, but I will let you know as soon as I know the date.  Many students who were in band last semester have expressed interested, please talk to you child to see if they are interested.  I will send home a form when we know the date!  

Guitars-  They continue to prepare for the concert during the school day on May 18th.
