I will not be here for the first semester until after Christmas next year, due to my baby being born.  There will be a person in my position, but I wanted to make you all aware.  Hope it is a great first semster and I will see you at the start of the year. 

Thank you for all the wonderful gifts from Teacher Appreciation week!  I felt very appreciated and special...I adore your children and feel very blessed to be at Holy Spirit...Thank you again!

Kindergarten: Fast and Slow Land, Rhythm Band, Song review

1st grade:  Circle Games: Black Snake, Chase the Squirrel
 2nd Grade: Students will  continue to use boom whackers to learn different songs in groups.  They will work as a group to master 2 songs this week.

 3rd Grade: We will continue to work on dynamic markings, fermata, octave and D.C. Al Fine understanding and identification. Students will be assessed their 2nd class period on their understanding

 4th Grade: Recorder work continues. Students will play as a group all songs.

5th grade: Students will work the next 3 class periods on Style projects with Powerpoint.  Students will be creating in class.
Annual Fund Dinner Class- We are doing "Glee Projects", Students will get rubrics tomorrow (Friday May 17th)  All 8th grade projects are due Thursday May 23rd.  All other grade levels are due Friday May 24th.  This is their final grade and must be completed! 
Jubilance Choir - Choir list will be posted next week for the upcoming year!
6th grade: Students will use barred instruments and learn about chords in music.  They will be playing a Song from England.

7th Grade: Students will be learning about sound waves and how sound is created.  They will understand the science behind music. Students will learn about how music relates to Science.  Their final grade will be a reflection over the information on sound and music in relation to Science. 

8th Grade: We will be continuing to learn how terms can be seen in art and music and how they connect.  We will be listening to absolute music and drawing conclusions with writing or drawing.  As a class we will look at how the term "belonging" relates to different aspects of music and the arts.

Next Wednesday and Thursday at the end of school, All students that will be in grades 6-8 will be coming to the music room to audition for Choir next year if they so choose.  Please talk with you children about the year long commitment for next year.  They can choose band, choir or general music as Middle School students.   

Annual Fund Dinner Videos are Due Tuesday if you would like to purchase one.  Please let me know so I can give you a form.  Also, AFD shirts are in, if your child ordered one, but did not pay...I need payment so they can get the shirt!  Thank you!

Kindergarten: Painting a house with Fritsch Trarsch Polka, Banyard Banter, and shacke and freeze tambourine.

1st grade:  Circle Games: "In and out the Window", "The Muffin Man".

 2nd Grade: Students will be using boom whackers to learn different songs in groups.  They will work as a group to master 2 songs this week.

5th grade: Still working on 16th note rhythms, students will be assessed this week.  Students will practice reading solfege with complex rhythms.
 Annual Fund Dinner Class- Clean up this week from Annual Fund.  We will work on a few new Mass pieces.

Dress rehearsals for Annual Fund Dinner this week. We want everyone to understand the expectations for the schedule.  We have practice 3 Days next week... Mon May 6th: 3-5, Tues May 7th. 3-5 and Wed May 8th. 6-8. The show is on Thurs May 9th. 6-8p.m.

The Annual Fund show on May 9th is reserved seating.  It is our largest fund raiser of the year and can be paid over a 12 month period.  Pledge cost is $100 per seat.  It includes a dinner and the show 'Alice in Wonderland.' We will do a show for the school the following day May 10th at 10:45 in the morning, this show has no cost. 
If you would like to put an ad cheering on your actor/acress or stage crew person, please get that information to me Friday.  $10 for quarter page, $20 for a half page and $40 for a whole page. 

Kindergarten: Singing, Dancing and review, new songs about trasnportation, animals and nature


1st grade: Listening to Gustov Holst's piece "The Planets" and watching short video.  They will write about their thoughts on the music, and what they have learned.

 2nd Grade: Students will identify concepts such as tone color, repetition and contrast in music and in other disciplines.

 3rd Grade:
Barred instruments- Students will be improvising in pairs

 4th Grade:
Please remind students about bringing recorders to class and practice.  They are working hard!

5th grade:
Students will be working with barred instruments; they will read music, putting their musical reading to the test!

Encourage kids to work on lines, dances, and singing.  We have had a few scheduling changes.  Please see note above.  Also, if you would like to give a shout out to your child in the program, there is note above about the procedure for that.  If you have a company or work for a company that would be willing to advertise through Holy Spirit all details are above!

As the year is coming to an end; we sometimes get Spring fever, please keep encouraging students of the importance of singing out and responding at Mass. 

 6th/7th/8th Grade: They will assisting with Annual Fund Needs, training of servers and the other food side, painting and anything else needed for AFD on Thursday!

REMINDER!!!!! Schedule Changes...Although 8th graders are very busy, we are asking they attend with their peers two specific rehearsals, Fri., 4/26 (return from DC), 3:00.  The May Day practiced has been canceled for Friday 5/3 and changed to Tuesday 4/30 from 3:00-4:00.  We want to make sure all are prepared for the show. Here are a few rehearsals on the schedule currently, but there will be time changes. Mon., 5/6, 3:00-5:00, Tues., 5/7 3:00-5:00, Wednesday., 5/8 Dress Rehearsal 6:00-8:00, The night of AFD students need to be present by 7:30 at the latest.

 Advertising!  This helps you and Holy Spirit!    

 If your company would like to have an Ad in the Annual Fund Dinner program,  please send to Mrs. Simms by Friday May 3rd.  I can create with your informtion or your use your business logo. Also if you would like to put an ad cheering your child on for Annual Fund Dinner that would be great too.  Kindergarten: Speechercise- Great warm ups to improve the voice and talking, We are doing a series of songs that star Clifford the big red dog, "Kuokburra and Clifford", "Clifford Went over the Mountain", "Do your ears hang low", "Down by the Bay".  Students will be using instruments with Greg and Steve's "Rock and Roll Rhythm Band"


1st grade: Students will be using some literacy and writing skills in music as they answer questions about Gustov's Holst's piece "The Planets".  They will act as detectives to find answers, color and answer questions.  Students will listen to the pieces and watch a short video and write about what they have learned.

2nd Grade: Students will compare and contrast using a Venn diagram the two pieces, one from Mozart and the other is by Miles Davis.  They will learn about characteristics of the different periods of music.

 

3rd Grade: Students will continue with their music writing activity.  They are using percussion instruments and barred instruments to write music.  They are using manuscript paper and working on how to write in 4/4 meter.

4th Grade: Please remind students about bringing recorders to class and practice.  They are working hard!

 5th grade: Students will be working with barred and percussion instruments; they will read music, learning more complex rhythms and syncopation.

Annual Fund Dinner Class:Next Week: Practice schedule has changed... Mon: 3-4, Tues. 3-4 Thurs. 3-4, no practice Fri.

 

Jubilance Choir As the year is coming to an end; we sometimes get Spring fever, please keep encouraging students of the importance of singing out and responding at Mass. 

 

6th Grade/7th Grade/8th Grade: We will be moving for ISTEP week, they will move with Mr. Glowinski and I during the two forty minute periods.  All grades will attend PE and Art sometime next week.  Monday and Thursday is 8th grade, 7th grade on Tuesday and 6th grade will attend on Wednesday.  Friday is May Day Mass for 8th grade, so we will not have any Unified Arts Classes.

Advertising!  This helps you and Holy Spirit!    

At Holy Spirit School our goal is always to create the best experience for our students and be up to date on quality education materials and technologies.  We will be starting a program to do just that. Advertising in our programs for our musical performance is one way we can make this possible.

The money we raise through our advertisements in the Annual Fund Dinner program handout will go toward the purchase of new sound equipment or other needs for Holy Spirit School.  Please consider advertising for your business or put in a personal ad to wish a child good luck!  All ads are due to Mrs. Simms by Friday May 3rd**

Middle School students will put on the Annual Fund Dinner On **May 9th starting at 8:00 P.M.**.  Some middle school students will be performing as an actor/actress or stage crew.  Others will be serving on the dinner side.  The whole school will attend the 10:45 performance on Friday, May 10th- all takes place in the gym

Voices in music, students will be identifying Male, Female and Children's voices in music.  The second class, we will discuss student’s music preferences with a follow art activity.

3rd Grade:

Kindergarten: 

5 Green and Speckled Frogs, 5 Little Muffins

1st grade :
Learning some new music terms, "pattern" and "Line" through moving and drawing.  Students will find connections between other curricular areas and music.  Students will learn about how listening, reading and moving is important in music. 

 2nd Grade:
"Peter and the Wolf" story continued...kids will focus on terms, and learn about other instruments in the Brass, Woodwind, Percussion and String Families.

  3rd Grade:
Barred instruments- echoing rhythmic patterns, reading notes, learning instrument names and learning instruments of other cultures.  Students will be assessed on their understanding of the different instruments, and their effort and participation with echoing and reading music lines.


4th Grade:
Recorders!!! Kids are really working hard to achieve their beads.  The beads are given to them to show when they have successfully completed a piece on recorder.  They are working very hard and practicing is going well!


 
5th grade:
Sight Singing and partner songs continued, they will be assessed over their effort and participation with the partner work in singing.

We are looking at Program Music related to history in Europe.  One example is Tchaikovsky's Overture.  We will create a timeline to discuss dates of other program music examples

7th Grade:
Students will be playing instruments in stations.  The instrument stations will include; Piano, Barred Instruments, and rhythm instruments.  Students will have a task to complete at each station which will require them to play the instruments and the music pieces in front of them.  Students final assessment  will be over their knowledge of the musical staff, piano key location and rhythmic knowledge.

8th Grade:
Students will play as arrangers in music.  They will take a piece of music and change it to make it their own.  They will be using the netbooks, and the program finale notepad to listen to their compositions.

AFD Parents: We are doing  a Saturday Tech practice to work on scenery and props.  Kids will be painting, drawing, cutting and gluing... so old clothes, please. Also we will need to open up doors, so have them bring warm clothes too. April 6th from 9:00 AM-2:00P.M. Pizza is provided for lunch, please send them with drinks or pop machine money.  If any parent wants to donate snacks, please let me know!  All are welcome to help, we have plenty to do! Please let me know if you child cannot attend!   If you child is on props crew, it is essential they are here! I need more parents to come and help watch kids.  If you are able and willing, I need your help!

Kindergarten: 

"Soup for Me", "Open Shut Them", "This is the Way", "If your name begins", "Bingo", "Put your finger in the Air", "Clap your hands", "2 Little Blackbirds"

  1st grade :
Review of  identifying instrumental, environmental and vocal sounds we hear.   We will also discuss the importance that these sounds play in our lives daily. "Piggy Bank"
 2nd Grade:
"Peter and the Wolf" story, we will be learning about instruments and their families

  3rd Grade:
Barred instruments- echoing rhythmic patterns, reading notes, learning instrument names


4th Grade:
Recorders!!! As we learn how to play recorders, students will be working at their own pace.  Check in with the grade book, the goal for each student is that they would be finishing about two songs a week, if they get behind the grade will reflect.  Please contact me with any questions.  They are working very hard and practicing is going well!


 
5th grade:
Notes and Solfege work continued, Quiz this week for 5th grade!  Mrs. McMahon's class will be doing some sight reading and working on some partner songs in class.


Annual Fund Dinner Class
Encourage kids to work on lines, dances, and singing.  We will be a having a day a work for props and scenery, on SATURDAY, April 6th.  We will get here at 9:00 and work until 2:00.  Pizza will be provided, please send kids with money for pop from the machine or with drinks and other snacks.  If any parent wants to donate for the kids other snacks, please let me know!  It will be fun, any and all help is welcomed!

Students will be improvising music in stations.  In groups, they will pick poems and create an instrumental accompaniment to go with the poems.

It was a great week!   

AFD Parents: We are doing  a Saturday Tech practice to work on scenery and props.  Kids will be painting, drawing, cutting and gluing... so old clothes, please. April 6th from 9:00 AM-2:00P.M. Pizza is provided for lunch, please send them with drinks or pop machine money.  If any parent wants to donate snacks, please let me know!  All are welcome to help, we have plenty to do! Please let me know if you child cannot attend!   If you child is on props crew, it is essential they are here!

Kindergarten: 
Composers in history, we will discuss what a musician is, and why they write music.  We listened to Mussorgsky's "Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks". We will listen to Copland, and Vivaldi while moving and then draw pictures to depict what each piece is about.

1st grade :
We will listen and identify instrumental, environmental and vocal sounds we hear.   We will also dicsuss the importance that these sounds play in our lives daily.

 2nd Grade:
Students will be listening as we identify changes in tempo and dynamics in different Instrumental pieces such as "Rite of Spring" by Stavinsky, Shostakovitch's "Symhony No. 9", "Claire De Lune" by Debussy, and "Surprise Symphony" by Haydn. 

3rd Grade:
Students will be given a poem and they will put instruments with it to create a music piece.

4th Grade: 
Recorders!!!  Students will practice; Mrs. Eastman's class is working on "Gently Sleep.  Ms. Glenn's class, it just playing currently, they have not been through the first song due to scheduling. The mouth pieces can be removed if they want to practice the fingerings, in the event that you prefer no sound. :)

5th grade:
Notes and Solfege work continued, Quiz next week for McMahon's class! Mrs. Elliot’s classes quiz will be the following week, due to scheduling.

We will listen to the pieces of music that the students researched last week, "Blowin in the Wind", "I am Women" and "Yankee Doodle" to see how the songs came about due to society at the time!  We were not able to get through the songs this week.

7th Grade:
Students will be playing instruments in stations.  The instrument stations will include; Piano, Barred Instruments, and rhythm instruments.  Students will have a task to complete at each station which will require them to play the instruments and the music pieces in front of them.

8th Grade:
Students will be improvising music in stations.  In groups, they will pick poems and create an instrumental accompaniment to go with the poems.  Students will act out card they are given by creating sound effects for each card.  Students will use the computers to change or arrange a short song to make it their own.

Have a safe and relaxing Spring Break! 
 
Kindergarten: 
Compoers in history, we will dicuss what a musician is, and why they write music.  We will listen to Copland, Vivaldi, and Mussorgsky while moving and then draw pictures to depict what each piece is about.

1st grade :
 Mood in music, how does it effect our mood?

 2nd Grade:
Listening as we compare and contact changes in tempo and dynamics.  Finding Repetition and Contrast in musical lines and songs


3rd Grade:
Students will performed their improvised dances.  Students will create in small groups new questions they will sing.  Students will create songs with the use of body percussion.

4th Grade: 
Recorders!!!  All students should have their recorders over break.  We will start working on Hot Cross Buns.  The mouth pieces can be removed if they want to practice the fingerings, in the event that you prefer no sound. :)
 
5th grade:

We are cleaning the dances, you will most likely get an email from me with a video clip for the kids to watch and learn a little dancing.  I told the kids not to worry about spending too much time, it will not be difficult.  Please encourage them to fit in wherever they can.

Choir Chimes, students will read music and play instruments.  Utilizing chords, and other musical terms as they play again, the music is more complex.

3rd Grade:
Students improvising answers to questions in complete sentances and will be creating their own music questions for peers to answer. They will be doing free improvisation with the "Hello Hello Hello" using body percussion.  Students will in be groups, pick a song and create dance moves to accompany song.  


4th Grade: 
Recorders!!!  Students must have recorders at school on Monday for class.  If you ordered a recorder through me, I will send them home with the kids as soon as they come in.   They should arrive by the end of the week.
5th grade:
Notes and Solfege work

Jubilance Choir
Particpates weekly in the Wednesday Masses and some students canter on Friday Masses, throughout the year.  Since Annual Fund practice has begun, please look for updates under that section. 

6th Grade:
Researcing how music has been effected through historical events.
7th Grade:
Cultural Music and part singing!  Utilizing musical terms while singing.
8th Grade:
Choir Chimes, students will read music and play instruments.  Utilizing chords, and other musical terms as they play.

ISTEP WEEK!!!!  For Middle School, Unified Arts teachers will be providing movement during one 40 minute period to get those brains working!  They will then be sent on their way to begin ISTEP testing.  They need to wear school uniforms.  Schedule for Middle School will change on Thursday and Friday.  Thursday will be a "C' day and Friday will be an "A" day.  The kids will know what that means for them.  Just check in with them for the P.E. uniform for whatever day they have class.
 
AFD- It is off book week, meaning all students should have all their lines and songs memorized for the 3/4 practice.  This week we will have Monday, Thursday and Friday after school practices from 3:00-4:00.
Kindergarten: 
Copy Rhythms, Create new music with instruments, and create with non instruments.

1st grade :
 Tempo Changes in music continued

2nd Grade:
Writing Music, using instruments and notation
3rd Grade:
Movement day, helping our brains for ISTEP testing- Draw Me a Bucket of Water, Holy Spirit School Song, they pick a movement activity

4th Grade:

Meet in the West Vestibule with Mrs. Newhart at 11:30, for the 12:00 Masses.  If Middle School Choir Members are not attending the Sunday Masses, grades will be lowered, if I am not contacted.  Please communicate, I know things come up.  If you do not attend the Mass, please remind students of proper etiquette at Mass, no talking and acting reverent in the church.

6th Grade General Music:
Discussion, Analyzation and writing reflection over the Asian Culture
7th Grade General Music: 
Listening and analyzing music with specific terms.  Students will have BAF due the following week after ISTEP


8th Grade General Music
Corrected BAF question due! Aural Rhythm Practice and exit ticket assessment. Working on Solfege and homework will be assigned for the week following ISTEP

Cultural Music Unit on Asia continued.  Students will work on learning music, dances and facts.  They will assessed on participation, effort, reflections.  One students gave a presentation over her Native Land, very interesting!

 
7th Grade General Music: 
Dynamics and other terms review. Forms Homework due, students must bring a song and identify it form.   Students need to have notebooks for every class.  We will be applying new music terms as we listen to music.  


8th Grade General Music
We will review terms with a partner, students will be assessed over the rhythms through an exit ticket at the end of class. Students need to have notebooks for every class.  Students will also begin to work with solfege and have homework for the following class.

 Annual Fund Practice will continue after school from 3:00-4:00.  Please check the schedule for specific dates.  The students in Annual Fund will have practice during the school day Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 7:45-8:24.  Please have kids here on time in the morning and avoid making appointments during the practice times. Remember if kids miss more than 5 practices not sure to illness they will be replaced in the show.  Any questions, please let me know!
  

Kindergarten: 
High and low in music is our concept for the week.  "Chinese Dance" "Three Bears", “The Hummingbird”, "Little Crab”

1st grade
Student will take an assessment over note writing and understanding.  Students will perform for class their note values.  We will begin talking about Sofege and the “Sound of Music”


2nd Grade:
Carnival of the Animals, instrumental introduction and analyzing music

3rd Grade: 
Note review and Solfege learning begins

4th Grade: 
We will begin looking at other cultures in music

5th grade:
Music in history, how music was apart of our history long ago. Railroad, Revoluntionary War, Jamestown, and Patriotic Songs.  Why is this meaningful to us in music class.  Students will write an essay on their favorite history song we studied.  We will begin to talk about culture in music also.

8th Grade General Music
Aural rhythm identification- will be performing their rhythm on the piano. They will be assessed over the following music terms: Dynamics, Articulation and other terms review, Repetition.  Students need to have notebooks for every class.
